About the Composer
John Verrall (1908–2001) was an American composer, teacher, and mentor whose career left a lasting mark on musical life in the Pacific Northwest. Born in Britt, Iowa, he studied with Donald Ferguson, R. O. Morris, Zoltán Kodály, Aaron Copland, and Roy Harris before joining the faculty of the University of Washington in 1948. There he taught composition and music theory for twenty-five years, becoming a central figure in the university’s musical life while inspiring generations of students through his thoughtful musicianship, generosity of spirit, and humility.
As a composer, Verrall wrote music ranging from piano miniatures to symphonies, concertos, operas, and chamber works. His compositions balance modern harmonic language with expressive lyricism and meticulous craftsmanship, creating works that are intellectually engaging without losing their emotional warmth. Although he received numerous honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, he remained known for his unwavering devotion to his students and his quiet, unassuming character.
